Canada Hosts GCTF Seminar to Advance Indigenous Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific

The international workshop on “The Prosperity of Indigenous Peoples Across the Indo-Pacific,” held under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework (GCTF), took place in Ottawa, Canada, on April 8. Co-organized by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada and the Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS) at the University of Ottawa, the event brought together Indigenous leaders, government officials, and experts from across the Indo-Pacific region.

Panelists included representatives of Canada’s three major Indigenous groups—the First Nations, the Métis, and the Inuit—alongside curators from Indigenous museums, government officials, and scholars from the United States, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan. The workshop focused on key themes such as Indigenous economic empowerment, education and language revitalization, and collaborative efforts between museums and Indigenous communities.

The event attracted more than 140 participants, including Canadian officials, Indigenous organizations, academics, members of the diplomatic corps, and media representatives. Lively discussions throughout the day underscored the importance of cross-border learning, cultural exchange, and community-led development in advancing Indigenous prosperity across the region.
